View Valentine's Day in New Light  by Janelle Alex, Ph.D. 2012

The typical thoughts around this day involve love, happiness, hearts, flowers, bliss, romance, and of course, chocolate ;-)

When I thought of writing about the 14th of February, this stuck out to me and I felt inspired to write about anger instead of the mushy gushiness that is so often related to this day of love. Read the full article...

Listen to audio version

It was the middle of the night on January 27, 2001.  After another big argument with my spouse, I had finally left.  Sitting on a friend’s couch I took my wedding rings off.  I was done.  I just couldn’t take anymore.  A month later, I moved into a rental home with my 4-year-old son.

8 Ways to Communicate with Your Partner by Janelle Alex, Ph.D. 2011
Listen to audio version

There are numerous ways we can communicate with our partners. You may not have considered some of the ones I am about to share. We do not all communicate the same; therefore we should not expect our partner to communicate in a specific way. We need to learn how he/she communicates best and work with that. At the same time, it is important for both partners to make an effort to meet in the middle. Communication and adjusting our way of communicating should not be one-sided. It takes both of us wanting to communicate to truly re-open and/or keep those lines open.

Below I am going to touch briefly on eight different types of communication.

How Far Would You Go For Your Partner by Janelle Alex, Ph.D. 2011

In February 2011, I was in California at a weeklong seminar. I was to be gone a total of nine days. Rob, my partner and husband, was at home 2300 miles away. Before I left he seemed to be coming down with a nasty cold or some type of flu. Because of my location and my busy schedule it was difficult to call; I usually just texted back and forth with him. When I did speak to him I noticed that this cold/flu "thing" was really taking a toll. On top of that a record-breaking ice storm had hit. My next to last day in California I called home again to talk to him.   ...take him to the emergency room...

Do you sometimes feel like your partner is a wimp or a pushover? Or do you experience the other end of the spectrum where you feel like your partner pushes you and others around and is down right overbearing? This happens far more than you might think. And, it happens in a variety of ways. Stereotypes often surround men being "wimpy" and women being "overbearing". Those men may experience being called sissies, along with other unpleasant names, while those women get called everything from bitches to... well, we won't even go there.  The truth is...

Sacred Sex Opens a Gateway  by Janelle Alex 2011
Listen to audio version

Nearly everyone does it, has done it, or will do it. It is the single most important thing in continuing human life. It can create new life. It can be an amazing and beautiful experience. It can honor the participants and the Divine. It can bond two people for life. It can help one lift the veil between one dimension and another. It can kill. It can be violent and abusive. It can cause severely deep emotional and psychological wounds. It has been considered a precious and sacred gift. It has been considered abominable and evil. What could be considered all of these things? What could be such a paradox?

You are happily in slumber as images begin to flit across your mind's eye. A woman is sitting with you at a kitchen table with sun glinting through the windows. Suddenly, you realize that the person you are talking to in your dream is your deceased aunt or you notice that the windows are near the floor instead of higher up on the wall and they are misshapen. Ah, you begin to comprehend that you are dreaming. You may feel great emotion in seeing your aunt or you may become fearful or you may just think, "This is only a dream," and you wake up. You have experienced a lucid dream.

Caring for Others  by Janelle Alex 2010
Listen to audio version

Are you a caregiver? Caring for children or elderly parents are obvious examples of being a caregiver, but there are other areas in which you take care of others. Do you have a partner or spouse, siblings, neighbors, co-workers that need your attention? Sometimes we overlook just where our energy really goes. If you have to help tend to someone, your energy reserves can be depleted rather quickly - especially if the needy one is highly demanding, in a state of depression, angry or negative. Giving to another can also be extremely fulfilling.  But, what about you?

Meeting Walnut  by Janelle Alex 2011
Listen to audio version

Chilled air brushed my face and the backs of my hands while the sun warmed me.  Shadows played across the landscape shifting to and fro as Earth rotated around Sun and breezes danced through the limbs and leaves of the trees.  Rocks crunching under my feet and grinding against one another are the only sounds I heard at first.  I moved down a small, but treacherous hill, where heavy amounts of small white rock have been poured as a path leading to the trail.  I came to a choice.
